Embryonic and Adult stem cell

Stem Cell

[3]

What is an embryonic stem cell?

An embryonic stem cell is the pluripotent inner cell mass in the blastocyst, the early stage embryo.

The embryo developement began with the zygote, the fertilized egg. The zygote is a totipotent stem cell that will differentiate into two type of cells that make up the blastocyst, the outer cell mass and the inner cell mass. The outer layer of cells of blastocyst called the outer cell mass provides nutrient to the embryo and later becomes the placenta. The inner cell mass is made up of the pluripotent stem cells in the blastocyst and these pluripotent stem cells in the blastocyst are the embryomic stem cells.

The inner cell mass that is made up of a few dozen of the embryonic stem cells that have pluripotent differentiate potential will later replicate and differentiate into all cells that make up of human body.

[6] The embryonic stem cell comes from the inner cell mass of the blastocyst

What is an adult stem cell?

An adult stem cell is usually a mutipotent stem cell and can to give rise to all cell in a specific tissue.  An example of adult stem cell is cord blood stem cell. The cord blood stem cell is responsible for producing red blood cell, white blood cell and platelets.

[5] Umbilical cord blood stem cell can differentiate into many specific cell including all the blood cell.

Cord blood stem cell

Cord blood stem cell is stem cell extracted from the umbilical cord or placenta when a baby is born. The most important factor of cord blood is that it contains many different multipotent  stem cells and these stem cells can produce new cells to replace cell damaged by disease or injury.

One of the many stem cells found in cord blood is the Haematopoietic stem cell. The haematopoietic stem cell is a self renewal stem cell separated from cord blood or bone marrow that can differentiate into other specialized cells. It is responsible for immune system and producing all types of cells in blood like red cells, white cells, and platelets. It is widely used in bone marrow transplant and treating blood diseases.
